Let's Get Started!

Standards: Geography Map Skills

  • Analyze and use various representations of the Earth (e.g., physical, topographical, political maps; globes; geographic information systems; aerial photographs; satellite images) to gather and compare information about a place.

  • Locate on a map or globe physical features (e.g., continents, oceans, mountain ranges, landforms) natural features (e.g., flora, fauna) and human features (e.g., cities, states, national borders) and explain their relationships within the ecosystem.

  • Use appropriate geographic resources to interpret and generate information explaining the interaction of physical and human systems (e.g., estimate distance, calculate scale, identify dominant patterns of climate and land use, compute population density).

Learning Objectives:

Requirements for a score of 3:

  • How to use a geographic information system, topographic maps to locate mountain range locations in MT (Pinning Locations)

  • Explain the relationship between mountain ranges and the surrounding areas. (Pinning Locations)

    • This will include pinning the locations of at least 10 streams exiting your range and listing the river system (major river) each stream dumps into.

  • Identify dominant patterns of land use near mountain ranges in MT (Pinning Locations)

    • This will include pinning the locations of every settled area (town) near your range. (within 50 miles)

  • A minimum of 10 other Pins (not streams or towns) with titles and descriptions.  Descriptions will come from researching pinned site locations online.

    • This can include trailheads, mountain names with elevations, lakes, meadows, ect...

Requirements for a score of 4:

  • All of the above requirements plus 10 more Pins

Your Tasks

  1. Start by signing into your SD5 Google Chrome account at your computer

  2. Access the Google Menu of Apps, click on More, open Maps.  In the upper left hand corner select the Menu button, click on Your places and then select the 4th option tab labeled Maps.  At the bottom of menu click Create map, Rename Map for the mountain range you have been assigned to.  Select the Base Map drop down menu and click - Change to Terrain.

  3. You have been assigned a specific MT mountain range (Use the maps at the bottom to help you find your range location).

  4. Once you have located your range on google maps, create a path around your entire range.  Once you have linked the path all the way around your range, it will save as a polygone.

  5. As you follow your range path around your range, look for creeks exiting your range and place a pin.  Follow the creeks to the main water source (major river) they feed into and list that information in your pin.

  6.  When you select any other point of interest, pin it and title it.  In order to describe your point of interest, you will need to do some research online to get specific information.  A few sentences to a paragraph may be necessary to describe your point of interest.

  7. With any extra time add more points of interest and descriptions or prepare to present your range tour to the class.
