Google Maps Activity 1:  Home to School

In this activity you will learn the following:

 

  • How to access and sign into Google Maps

  • How to zoom in and out and scroll around Google Maps

  • How to create Pins with titles and descriptions.

  • How to save your Pins so they can be accessed on a different computer with Google Maps

 

You will be assessed on Work Ethic: Focus on the activity

 

Let’s Begin!

 

Signing In

  1. Start by signing into your SD5 Google Chrome account at your computer

    1. Create a folder in Drive in your Social Studies folder called “Google Maps”

  2. Access the Google Menu of Apps, click on More, open Maps.  In the upper left hand corner select the Menu button, click on Your places and then select the 4th option tab labeled Maps.  At the bottom of menu click Create map, rename Map for your name and the word home.  

 

Scrolling Around

  1. Start by moving the map around by clicking and dragging with your mouse

    1. If you don’t have a mouse you can move around with the arrow keys

  2. Next, you can zoom in on a specific area by using the roller on your mouse

    1. If you don’t have a roller on your mouse you can click the + button

  3. Spend some time zooming in and out and moving around the earth to locations you have been to

 

Creating Pins

  1. Find your home or where you are currently living on Google maps

  2. Click on the tool that looks like a rain drop in the tools bar

    1. Click on your home to create the pin 

  3. In the popup box change the title to your name + home (Mr. Schreiner Home)

  4. In the popup box add a description of your choosing for your home

 

 

How to get from your home to school

  1. From your home pin I want you to place a pin at every turn you make to get to KMS in the morning.

  2. The second pin you place will be coming out of your drive way.     

    1. Title that pin “turn left or right out of drive way”

  3. For all following pins, label them which way you are turning and the name of the road you are turning on to.             

  4. If you have duplicates of pin descriptions “turn left highway 12” “turn left highway 12(2)” add a parentheses and count up

  5. Do this all the way to KMS, add a pin for KMS

  6. If you have time, play with the path tool and try to create a path from your home to the school.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

When you are done, raise your hand so Mr. Schreiner can check off all of your tasks
