Google Maps Activity 2: MT Rivers Tour

Before you start this lesson you have to complete Google Maps Activity 1: Home to School with the following objectives:

  • How to access and sign into Google Maps

  • How to zoom in and out and scroll around Google Maps

  • How to create pins/markers with titles and descriptions.

  • How to add layers to your map

  • How to save your pins/markers so they can be accessed on a different computer with Google Maps App

Let's Get Started!

Standards: Geography Map Skills

  • Analyze and use various representations of the Earth (e.g., physical, topographical, political maps; globes; geographic information systems; aerial photographs; satellite images) to gather and compare information about a place.

  • Locate on a map or globe physical features (e.g., continents, oceans, mountain ranges, landforms) natural features (e.g., flora, fauna) and human features (e.g., cities, states, national borders) and explain their relationships within the ecosystem.

  • Use appropriate geographic resources to interpret and generate information explaining the interaction of physical and human systems (e.g., estimate distance, calculate scale, identify dominant patterns of climate and land use, compute population density).

Learning Objectives:

Requirements for a score of 3:

  1. How to use a geographic information system, aerial photographs, and satellite images to locate river locations in MT (Pinning Locations)

  2. Explain the relationship between rivers and the surrounding areas. (Pinning Locations)

  3. Identify dominant patterns of land use near rivers in MT (Pinning Locations)

  4. A minimum of 10 Pins with titles and descriptions.  Descriptions will come from researching pinned site locations online.

Requirements for a score of 4:

  1. All of the above requirements plus 10 more Pins

Your Tasks

  1. Start by signing into your SD5 Google Chrome account at your computer

  2. Access the Google Menu of Apps, click on More, open Maps.  In the upper left hand corner select the Menu button, click on Your places and then select the 4th option tab labeled Maps.  At the bottom of menu click Create map, Rename Map for the river you have been assigned to.  Select the Base Map drop down menu and click - Change to satellite view.

  3. You have been assigned a specific MT River or a section of a MT River, find the headwaters (where the river forms) of your river (Use the map at the bottom to help you find your river).

  4. Place a pin at your rivers headwaters and title it "*river name*+headwaters".  There is no description needed for this pin and does not count towards your 10 minimum.  Create a blue path from your river's headwaters to its end point or confluence.  To end a path, click on the last point you selected and it will ask you to save.

  5. As you follow your river downstream look for towns, landmarks, dams, irrigation canals, landforms, and specific use land (farm, ranch, etc..)  When you select a point of interest, pin it and title it.  In order to describe your point of interest, you will need to do some research online to get specific information.  A few sentences to a paragraph may be necessary to describe your point of interest.

    1. You will need a minimum of 10 points of interest with descriptions in order to get a 3 for a content grade.  10 more pins are required for a 4

  6. With any extra time add more points of interest and descriptions or prepare to present your river tour to the class.
